HISTORY

50th Anniversary Champions - Confederates

What is a Champion?

The simple definition of Champion in the Barbershop Harmony Society is the quartet that was judged the winner at the annual SPEBSQSA quartet competition in any given year.

In sports, a winner is simply the competitor who has the better score at the end of the game—the one who beat all opponents. In barbershop, though, as in any artistic endeavor, we don’t 'beat' anyone, and there are no 'opponents'. Only in the combined light of the other quartets’ excellence does the winner’s gold medal have any luster.

In the end, the championship resides not in medals or trophies, but in the hearts and souls of our audiences. As champions, we are dedicated to preserving and encouraging the heritage of our style of music and the memory of all our fellow champions.

"Once a champion, always a champion!"
